F.A.S.T at CFT: measuring equipment for water loss, leak detection and gas location

Water is rarely lost loudly. It seeps, it hisses quietly, it only shows up in the annual balance. F.A.S.T builds instruments for exactly this task: measuring quantities, making noises audible, closing in on leaks from two measuring points and, where sound no longer carries, proving them with hydrogen as a tracer gas. CFT uses them in its own locating work, in the local network just as on service connections and in buildings.

Official dealer for Austria and southern Germany

CFT Group GmbH in Traiskirchen and CFT Group Deutschland GmbH, Lange Zeile 27, D-85435 Erding, carry F.A.S.T as the official dealer for Austria and southern Germany. That means: ordering within the German-speaking area, a contact who knows the instrument, no detour via a foreign distributor. Quotation and delivery run through the group shop SEMPERDEAL; questions about the choice we answer beforehand on +43 (0) 2252 53169, Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 16:30 and Friday 8:00 to 12:00.

The F.A.S.T range

Inflow and flow measurement

Before searching comes counting: the question of quantity in a section of network stands at the beginning when a network is first to be narrowed down and then searched. The ZM inflow measurement systems are available for this in three sizes, and they are selected not by the flange size but by the inflow of the section: DN 50 up to a maximum of 70 m³/h, DN 65 up to a maximum of 142 m³/h, DN 80 up to a maximum of 180 m³/h. The zone balance thus leads to the size – the highest inflow to be expected, as a rule the daytime peak, has to stay below the upper limit, while the water loss of the same section can later be read off its minimum night flow. If you know both figures, the size is decided; if you do not, we go through them with you before the order.

The ZM Ultra KIT03 measures the same quantity by ultrasound instead of through a mechanical measuring element. It comes into consideration where no moving measuring element is to stand in the flow.

Acoustic prelocation and pinpointing

The Aqua range covers everyday acoustic work, from the Aqua M50 complete system through the robust Aqua M60, also with a contact microphone, to the Aqua M100, Aqua M200 and Aqua M300 sets. In addition there are the mechanical listening sticks MH and MH2. You reach for this group when the section is known and the position has to be found to within a metre.

Leak noise correlation and hydrophones

Where traffic noise, depth or plastic pipe interferes with pinpointing, leak noise correlation helps. The range includes the LOKAL-200PC PC leak noise correlator in the standard version and the LOKAL400 correlator in the KIT2 and KIT4 versions. The PipeMic Flex 50 m, PipeMic M 50 m, PipeMic XL 100 m and PipeMic XXL 300 m hydrophones supplement the range for measurements from inside the pipe.

Hydrogen as a tracer gas

The Gas Check H2 basic set, the H2 hand sensor for the Aqua M300 and the GasDiffuser for H2 tracer gas belong to the tracer gas method. It comes into play where there is nothing more to be gained acoustically: with very small escapes, unpressurised pipes or plastic pipe in the screed.

Pressure measurement and network work

The Drulo III pressure measuring instruments come in 20 bar and 30 bar, together with a hydrant claw, charging cradle and six-way charging box. The PWG II pulse wave generator produces a pressure signal in the main; the FAST MD100 magnetic locator finds concealed fittings in the ground again.

You will find the complete F.A.S.T range with all versions and accessories in the group shop: F.A.S.T at SEMPERDEAL.

What these instruments are used for

F.A.S.T builds measuring equipment that narrows down water losses and locates leaks. The inflow measurement systems run with us in water loss analysis; Aqua instruments, listening sticks and correlators are the tools of burst location and leak detection in the supply network and of burst and leak detection in and around buildings. We use the hydrogen tracer gas in leak detection on heating systems, the Drulo III in documented pressure testing. Behind every piece of advice on a version there is not a data sheet but a working day with it.

On-site instruction and training

For every electrical instrument bought from CFT we offer instrument instruction directly on site, expressly including F.A.S.T. We come to you and introduce the operation in a practical way, in your familiar surroundings instead of in a training room. In addition there is a training programme of basic and advanced modules, among them acoustic pipe locating. Dates through office@cft.at or +43 (0) 2252 53169.

Service, repair and calibration

We do not hold a manufacturer’s repair authorisation for F.A.S.T. Without one we do not open an instrument – not even one you bought from us. Do not send it off on the off chance: call us, we will tell you where it belongs and handle the arrangements with the manufacturer.

With measuring equipment more hangs on the calibration than the function of the instrument: an inflow or pressure record is only worth as much as the proof that the instrument was calibrated at the time of measurement. At F.A.S.T this affects three groups of instruments above all – the Drulo III pressure loggers, the ZM and ZM Ultra inflow and flow measurement systems and the LOKAL-200PC and LOKAL400 correlators. Which interval applies to each group, whether we calibrate in house under manufacturer authorisation or pass the instrument on to F.A.S.T, whether you get back a works certificate or a calibration certificate with traceability to national standards, how long the instrument is away and whether a replacement instrument is provided for that time, we will tell you for the specific instrument before you send it in – by telephone on +43 (0) 2252 53169 or through support@semperdeal.com.

Frequently asked questions

Which Aqua instrument suits my area of use?

That depends less on the pipe material than on the surroundings. For occasional service connections a smaller complete system is enough; the larger sets are built for daily network work with background noise. Describe the typical job to us.

Do I need a supply of gas as well for the hydrogen method?

The Gas Check H2 is carried as a basic set; the GasDiffuser and H2 hand sensor are separate items. The test gas itself we settle with you case by case.

Can I buy the correlator and the hydrophone separately?

Yes, the LOKAL-200PC, LOKAL400 and the PipeMic hydrophones are separate items in the shop. Whether your existing instrument works with an additional hydrophone, we check beforehand using model and serial number.

Can I hire a correlator or an inflow measurement system?

The group shop currently carries only two hire items, both from Radiodetection: the complete C.A.T4+ set with GENNY4 and the complete RD8XXX set with Tx10. For F.A.S.T no hire item is listed. For a single measurement campaign – a night measurement, a time-limited zone balance – please enquire with us directly instead of relying on what the shop lists. The other way is to place the campaign as a service: we run the water loss analysis with our own instruments.

Can I get spare and wearing parts separately?

Yes, as far as they have a separate item in the shop. Listed are, among others, the headphones with a 6.35 mm jack plug, the large measuring wheel, the charging cradle and six-way charging box for the Drulo III and the hydrant claw. Sensors, batteries and cables that are not in the shop we enquire about from the manufacturer with model and serial number.

At what intervals does the measuring equipment have to be calibrated?

That depends on the group of instruments and on what the result is used for: a pressure logger or an inflow measurement system whose values go into a record for third parties is to be treated differently from a correlator that only narrows down the place to dig. The interval for your instrument we will tell you before purchase, so that it fits into your maintenance planning.
