SPRINGBOK time domain reflectometers at CFT

For us SPRINGBOK stands for a single, clearly defined tool: the time domain reflectometer, known internationally as a TDR. It sends a pulse into the cable and measures when and how the echo comes back; from that follows the distance to the discontinuity. At CFT almost every cable fault begins with this measurement, long before anyone thinks of a spade.

Official dealer for Austria and southern Germany

CFT Group GmbH in Traiskirchen and CFT Group Deutschland GmbH, Lange Zeile 27, D-85435 Erding, are the official dealer for this brand in Austria and southern Germany. Ordering is through the group shop SEMPERDEAL, and the advice beforehand comes from people who have the same instrument in use themselves. Quotation, delivery and queries run in German, without a detour via a foreign distributor, and with the accessories you are told which adapter belongs to which connector. We can be reached Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 16:30 and Friday from 8:00 to 12:00 on +43 (0) 2252 53169.

The SPRINGBOK range

The two time domain reflectometers

The range carries the TRACKER STD and the TRACKER PRO in version V3. Both work on the same principle and give a distance to the discontinuity, not its position on the ground. Which instrument suits is decided by your daily work: by the type of cable and by how often and how roughly the instrument travels with you.

Measuring and connection accessories

Without a clean connection there is no usable trace. This includes the test lead for the TRACKER PRO and TRACKER STD as well as the BNC to F-type adapter plug, with which the same instrument can also be used on coaxial runs with an F connector, as is usual in cable TV and aerial work. Both parts can be ordered separately.

Charging equipment and transport

In addition there are the EU charger for both instruments and the shoulder carrying bag for the TRACKER PRO. An instrument that arrives at the manhole with a flat battery costs half the appointment.

You will find all available SPRINGBOK items in the group shop: SPRINGBOK at SEMPERDEAL.

What these instruments are used for

Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is the method with which the SPRINGBOK instruments prelocate cable faults. It stands at the beginning of cable fault location on service and supply cables, on telecoms, data and cable TV lines, on control and coaxial cables, on low- and medium-voltage cables and on street lighting. We therefore also know the limits of the method from our own experience: with high-resistance faults, where the cable is still electrically almost inconspicuous, time domain reflectometry often gives no usable echo, and bridge measurement or the surge method has to take over. Anyone who sells a TDR without saying so is selling a disappointment.

On-site instruction and training

SPRINGBOK is named expressly in the undertaking on instrument instruction: CFT gives on-site instruction on every electrical instrument bought from us, alongside SPRINGBOK by name on Radiodetection, Schonstedt, Pearpoint, CamTronics and F.A.S.T. Our team comes to you and introduces operation and application in a practical way. The training programme goes with this: the basic module Basic techniques of cable fault location lasts three hours, the advanced module Time domain reflectometry (TDR) two hours with theory and practice, and it requires the basic module. Dates through office@cft.at or +43 (0) 2252 53169.

Service, repair and calibration

SPRINGBOK is held in CFT’s repair form as an instrument manufacturer; repair, service and calibration can be registered. Register the case in advance and enclose the completed repair form with the parcel, or alternatively send it digitally to support@semperdeal.com. Have model, serial number, a description of the fault and, if possible, photographs ready.

Frequently asked questions

TRACKER or LEXXI – which time domain reflectometer suits?

CFT carries four time domain reflectometers: the TRACKER STD and TRACKER PRO V3 from SPRINGBOK and the LEXXI T1660 and 1205CXB from Radiodetection. All four work on the same pulse-echo principle, so the choice is decided not by the method but by your work: by the type of cable, by the lengths you usually have in front of you, and by how often and how roughly the instrument travels with you. Call us before ordering and we will narrow it down to one instrument in conversation.

Can I find the fault position in the ground with the TRACKER?

No, not on its own. Time domain reflectometry gives the distance from the measuring point, not the point on the ground. Only when the route has been traced and marked on the surface can the measured distance be set out along it. For the line tracing you also need a locator, for high-resistance faults a surge method.

May I measure on a cable that is live?

No. Measurement is carried out solely on a cable that has been isolated and de-energised and disconnected at all ends. Who does the isolating is to be settled beforehand: for service connections the electrician or the network operator, within the building the building services staff. This rule applies in our own work just as it does in the instruction.

What do I need the BNC to F-type adapter for?

Many coaxial runs in cable TV and aerial work end with an F connector. For these runs the range carries the BNC to F-type adapter plug; it closes the gap without a cable having to be made up. Anyone who regularly measures on such runs keeps it permanently in the bag.

Can I order the test lead, charger and bag separately later?

Yes, these items are listed separately and are not tied to the purchase of an instrument. The EU charger fits the TRACKER PRO and TRACKER STD, the carrying bag is designated for the TRACKER PRO. Tell us the instrument type and we will check that it matches.

How quickly is an instrument available?

Availability is stated with the item in the shop. If an instrument is not in stock, we give the delivery date before the order.

Ask for advice

We advise before you order.

Tell us what it is about – an instrument, accessories, a spare part or advice. We will tell you what these instruments can do.

What happens next

  1. We check whether the instrument fits your task – and tell you if it does not.
  2. You receive an offer including instruction; service and calibration where we hold the manufacturer’s authorisation.
  3. On request we demonstrate it on a real case beforehand.
