Schonstedt magnetic locators at CFT
A manhole cover under ten centimetres of topsoil, a surface box tarmacked over, a boundary peg in the scrub: finds like these have no cable to which a signal could be applied. Schonstedt builds magnetic locators that respond to the iron itself – without a transmitter, without a signal injection point. At CFT one of these instruments travels with us almost always, because the first step is often not the locating, but finding again what has become overgrown or built over.

The Schonstedt range
The Schonstedt programme is narrow: five instruments for the same task, differing in design and equipment. The decision is made less on the technology than on how long the instrument is in the hand each day.
Compact magnetic locators: SPOT and MAGGIE
The SPOT magnetic locator and the MAGGIE magnetic locator are the instruments for a quick reach. They suit anyone who has to find a cover or a box again between two operations: while reading meters, during maintenance, before an excavation.
The GA range: for the whole working day
The GA range is designed for sustained searching in the field, for network operators, surveyors and municipal works that walk whole streets or sections of route. For a water board the dividing line runs like this: the single surface box in the built-up area that has to be found again while reading meters or before an excavation is a case for SPOT or MAGGIE – the instrument is in the hand for minutes. Walking a route in grassland, the feeder main along the farm track, checking a whole district before the frost period: there people walk for hours, and that is what the GA range is built for.

What these instruments are used for
Locating concealed manholes stands or falls with the magnetic search: Schonstedt instruments respond to the iron itself, without a transmitter and without a signal injection point. In site and route utility clearance surveys the magnetic search is the operation that first clears the area roughly: manhole covers, surface boxes, old iron parts. In valve exercising and maintenance it decides whether a gate valve is found at all before it can be turned. In pipe and utility detection it supplements electromagnetic locating where no signal can be applied, and for cable and pipe utility asset records for GIS the manhole structures found are the fixed points of the data set. From these jobs we also know the limits of the method: a surface box directly beneath a reinforced carriageway, or close alongside a steel main running parallel to it, disappears into the signal of the larger mass of iron. Then it is not the magnetic locator that takes you further, but the plan, sonde location or digging at the known connection point. And a box with no iron content is beyond even the best magnetic locator.
On-site instruction and training
For every electrical instrument bought from us we offer instruction directly on site, Schonstedt expressly included. Our team shows the operation on your own ground, with your manholes and your subsoil – worth more in magnetic searching than any demonstration on a level meadow, because vegetation, reinforcement and stray iron determine what happens in practice. The training modules on the basic techniques of cable and pipe locating go with this: a basic module for up to 30 participants, the practical advanced modules for three to five participants per trainer depending on the module.
Service, repair and calibration
Schonstedt is held in CFT’s repair form as an instrument manufacturer – you therefore register a repair, service or calibration directly under the brand, without the detour of a free-text entry. Advance registration with model and serial number to support@semperdeal.com.
Frequently asked questions
Does a magnetic locator also find plastic pipes or electronic markers?
No. A magnetic locator responds to ferromagnetic material, that is to iron and steel. A plastic pipe with no iron content stays invisible; for that you need a sonde in the pipe or ground penetrating radar. Electronic markers are searched for with a marker locator, for example the MRX Marker Locator from Radiodetection in our range.
I already have a cable locator. Do I need a Schonstedt as well?
The two work differently: the cable locator needs a signal on the line or an existing field, the magnetic locator only the iron in the ground. For manhole covers, surface boxes, survey markers and iron parts with no connection point at all, the magnetic search is the shorter way.
Does that work under tarmac, gravel or vegetation as well?
Yes, that is the usual application. The limits are set by the surroundings: reinforcement, crash barriers and stray iron in the excavated soil produce indications that have to be interpreted.
Are accessories and spare parts available?
The shop currently lists the five instruments, with no accessory programme of its own. If you need a spare part, a bag or consumables, please enquire quoting model and serial number.
